Gary Schumm

PEKIN ~ Gary L. “Duke” Schumm, 74, of Pekin, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, April 9, 2017 at his home.

Born November 22, 1942 in Pekin to Frederick J. and Eunice O. (Mitchell) Schumm, he married Sheila A. Ramsey on February 16, 1964 in Pekin.  She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Jeffry (Kim) Schumm of Lafayette, IN, Jillian (Bao LeHuu) Schumm of Orlando, FL and Janine Schumm of Pekin; five grandchildren, Rachel Schumm, Jared Schumm, Andrew Schumm, Grace Cho Schumm, all of Lafayette, IN, Talais Schumm LeHuu of Florida; his sister-in-law, Pat Schumm of Manito and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard E. Schumm.

Gary worked as a blacksmith, rigger-welder and pipefitter at Keystone Steel & Wire Company for 40 ½ years, retiring in January 2005.  He was treasurer of the Keystone Friendly Neighbor Club for several years.

He was a member of the Pekin Friends of Channel 47, and a volunteer for their annual auction and phone drives.  He was a volunteer at Good Shepherd Lutheran School and Ewes Treasures.  He also served on the school’s auction committee for many years.

He was a Cub Scout Master for the Douglas School troop for three years.  He also coached his girls through Pekin Union Mission softball for three years.

Gary was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin, where over the years he served on the stewardship committee and evangelism committee.  He also had served the church as Sunday school superintendent, youth counselor, usher and elder.

His hobbies included gardening and watching his grandchildren in their school sports and activities.  He also enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader and a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.  He was a good friend to all and very faithful to God.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pekin.  The Rev. Thomas L. Heren and Rev. Jeff Anderson will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, and also from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church.  Burial will be in Sand Prairie Cemetery in rural Green Valley.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran School, 3201 Court Street, Pekin, IL 61554 or to Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Fund, 700 South 4th Street, Pekin, IL 61554.
