Virginia Pumphrey

PEKIN ~ Virginia M.A. Pumphrey, 93, of Pekin, passed away and made her final journey at 8:53 a.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Pekin Manor.

Born November 2, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to William S. and Gladys L. (Cox) Tresh, Sr., she first married Thomas E. Bramham, Sr.  She later married John W. Pumphrey.  He died May 13, 1962.  She also was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas E. Bramham, Jr. and Jerry A. Pumphrey, Sr.; three grandsons, Stephen Pumphrey, Jerry A. Pumphrey, Jr. and Brad Pumphrey; three sisters and one brother.

Surviving are one son, John W. (Gwen) Pumphrey, Jr. of Elmwood; two daughters, Pat (W.C.) Barnes of Creve Coeur and Connie (Butch) McCamy of Manito; twelve grandchildren, Corey McCamy, Waylon (Patheresa) McCamy, Justin (Stacey) McCamy, Rick McCamy, Jason (Jackie) Pumphrey, Josh (Ashlee) Pumphrey, Kim (Tim) Sack, Kelly (Peter) Vo, Keri (Matthew) Hurd, Scott Pumphrey, Chad Pumphrey and Amy (Daryl) Barth; thirty-six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Virginia worked as a cook at many restaurants in Creve Coeur and Pekin.

She volunteered with the Share Food program for several years. 

Virginia was a leading member of the “Slick Chicks.” 

She was a big supporter of Native American culture and events.  She enjoyed going to Native American pow wows, listening to the music and watching the dancers.  She was a supporter of Seven Circles Heritage Center.

Virginia also was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals

Her funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  The Rev. Connie Rigler will officiate.  Visitation will be held two hours before the funeral.  Private burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Seven Circles Heritage Center, 8817 W. Southport Road, Edwards, IL 61528 or to Lupus Foundation of Central Illinois, P.O. Box 791, Pekin, IL 61555.

The family would like to thank Virginia’s daughter-in-law, Serita Smith, for helping with her care and also to the staff at Pekin Manor for the excellent care they offered Virginia.
