Shirley Metzler

PEKIN ~ Shirley Kay Metzler, 76, of Pekin, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Pekin Manor.

Born December 5, 1941 in Moline to Floyd and Disie (Lawson) Weihler, she married Duane Metzler on June 4, 1961 in Viola. He survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Yvette (Kirby) Earnest and Trisha (Ryan) Clark, both of Pekin; two sons, Duane Metzler, Jr. of Pekin and Scott (Michelle) Metzler of Travelers Rest, SC; eight grandchildren, Brian (Michelle) Earnest, Chelsea (Josh) Ganion, Jarrod Earnest, Cole and Carson Metzler, Jade (Christian) Clabaugh, Emma and Bella Clark; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Lilian Ganion and two sisters, Fran Masters of Milan and Carol Peterson of Viola.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Caleb Earnest and one sister, Donna Duffy.

A homemaker, Shirley had worked as a school crossing guard for the City of Pekin at C.B. Smith School for 20 years, retiring in 1995.

She enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking and crafting. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. Shirley was known for her loving and generous ways.

Shirley was a 44-year member of First United Methodist Church of Pekin, where she was an active member of the kitchen committee. 

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018 at Viola United Methodist Church. The Rev. James C. McClarey will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Additional visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday morning at the church in Viola. Burial will be at Viola Cemetery.
