Herbert L. Hungate

PEKIN ~ Herbert Lee Hungate, 88, of Pekin, passed away at 2:14 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Born February 1, 1930 in Toulon to Hallie H. and Guendolyn (Clark) Hungate, he married Marjorie Mae Harris on October 22, 1954 in McLeansboro. She died January 7, 2000 in Pekin. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bob and four sisters, Marie, Vera, Carrie and Maxine.

Surviving are one daughter, Dixie (Dan) Brooks of Pekin; one grandson, Lee Robert (Mandy) Woll of Pekin; two great- granddaughters, Sidney and Journey Woll, both of Pekin; three great-grandsons, Dawson, Paxton and Easton Woll, all of Pekin; one sister-in-law, Judy (Dale) Gerber of Pekin; several nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, J-Lo.

Herbert retired in 1981 after 32 years of service at Caterpillar, Inc. in East Peoria’s Building LL working as an automatic welder. He had also worked at Big League Sports in Pekin until it’s closing and was School Bus Driver for Hoyle Transportation Dept. and the City of Pekin for 20 years.

He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop #77 in Pekin from 1985 to 1992. Herbert enjoyed gardening and his Friday lunches at Busy Corner Cafe with his friends, known as the “round table group”. His greatest enjoyment was his grandson and great-grandchildren and attending their sporting events.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m Friday, April 13, 2018 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Judy Kennedy will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Military rites wil be provided by the United States Army and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
