Ernest E. Ertmoed

MORTON ~ Ernest E. “Ernie” Ertmoed, 86, of Morton, passed away at 12:36 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2018 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.  He was formerly of Pekin.

Born April 10, 1932 in Pekin to Ernest Allen and Dolly Evelyn (Long) Ertmoed, he married Margie Ellen Lane on April 5, 1953 in Pekin.  She died February 25, 2018 in Morton.  He also was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred F. Klokkenga.

Surviving are one son, Dr. Ernest E. (Diane) Ertmoed of Springfield; five daughters, Diane (James) Jackman, Denise (Gary) Nash, both of Pekin, Cindy (David) Sinn of Delavan, Elaine Ertmoed and Judy (David) Cooksey, both of Pekin; thirteen grandchildren, Ernest Eric (Kelly) Ertmoed, Matthew (Lora) Ertmoed, Brett (Jenny) Ertmoed, Valerie (Bryan) Cheek, George (Tina) Jackman, Paul (Jennifer) Nash, Joshua (Alyson) Nash, Jennifer Sinn, Janice (Jeremy) Hanshaw, Michael Sinn, Christina (Jordan) Anderson, Stephen Cooksey and Derek Cooksey and thirteen great-grandchildren.  He was looking forward to the birth of his fourteenth great-grandchild.

Ernie was a 1950 graduate of Pekin Community High School.

He was a United States Army veteran serving from 1952 to 1954, attaining the rank of Sergeant. 

Ernie retired as Assistant Fire Chief in 1987 from the Pekin Fire Department with 26 years of service.  In earlier years, Ernie worked at Soldwedel Dairy in Pekin, where he met his wife, Margie.  He also had worked part-time for Equifax and MTI.

He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton.  He was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pekin.  Ernie was a member of Local 524 of the International Association of Firefighters and a past member of Tazewell Toastmasters.

Spending time with family was important to Ernie and he always enjoyed weekly get-togethers with his family.  In addition to family time, he also enjoyed having friends stop by to talk on the swing in their yard.  Ernie enjoyed reading, photography, making homemade greeting cards, traveling, taking annual vacations to Gulf Shores and visiting over 101 covered bridges through the United States.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2018 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton.  Pastor Jeff Anderson will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, and also from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the church.  Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery in rural Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the United States Army.  Firefighter honors will be provided by the Pekin Fire Department Honor Guard.
