GREEN VALLEY ~ Vergie K. Friedrich, 80, of Green Valley, passed away at 5:17 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
Born November 6, 1937 in Pekin to Paul and Jean (Bennett) Schleder, she married Robert D. “Bob” Friedrich on October 20, 1957 at St. John’s (Sand Prairie) Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley. He survives.
Surviving are three children, Deanne (Charlie) Brown of Pekin, Keith (Christen) Friedrich of Green Valley, and Trudy (Jeff) Kreiling of Dubuque, Iowa; five grandchildren, Whitney Brown of Nashville, Tennessee, Adam Friedrich of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Luke Friedrich of Green Valley, Anna Friedrich of Green Valley, and Audrey Kreiling of Dubuque, Iowa and one sister, Paula (Don) Durant of Pekin.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a 1955 graduate of Pekin Community High School. She attended Valparaiso University.
A dedicated farm wife for 61 years, Vergie had worked at Caterpillar, Inc. in earlier years and later worked at Jones Bros. Jewelers in Pekin. She also volunteered many hours working at Ewe’s Treasure Resale Shop in Pekin, serving on the executive board.
She was a devoted member of St. John’s (Sand Prairie) Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley. She was a member of the Epiphany Society, Hannah Guild, and bell choir at the church. She also served in the Sunday School, as a greeter, and played piano for many groups and programs at St. John’s. An active member of the church’s Couples’ Club, she organized many bus trips over the years. She gave countless hours to both the church and Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
Vergie was an avid card player, belonging to several card clubs. She loved to challenge the grandkids to a game of rummy, euchre, Skip-bo, or Uno. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was especially well known for her delicious pies. She will be remembered for her gift of hospitality. No one ever went away hungry.
Vergie’s greatest passion was her family. She fiercely loved her children and grandchildren and was immensely proud of all their achievements. She loved to plan family gatherings and trips.
Her memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018 at St. John’s (Sand Prairie) Lutheran Church in rural Green Valley. Pastor Chris Sansom and DCE William Krueger will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the church. Inurnment will follow the service in Sand Prairie Cemetery. Arrangements are by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
