PEKIN ~ Marvin G. Wood, 87, of Pekin, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Born May 15, 1931 in East Peoria to Vernon O. and Goldie A. (Merideth) Wood, he married Janis L. Bigham on June 8, 1957 in Neponset. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Tami S. (Warren) Sharp of Pekin, Lisa D. Barclay of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Amy J. (Rick) Ramsey of Downs; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Claire) Sharp of Morton, Sarah (Jeremy) Hasis of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Tara (Kim) Picken of Morton, Rachel Green of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Daniel Barclay of Fort Pierce, Florida, Katy Ramsey of Chicago and Anna Ramsey of Downs; nine great-grandchildren, Olivia, Alissa, Christopher, Gage, Jake, Harper, Owen, Gavin and Blair and two sisters, Verna L. Gordon of Congerville and Shirley Potter of Morton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Ann Tate.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1955 in Japan.
Marvin worked for Sherex Chemical Company in Mapleton in the maintenance department for 27 ½ years, retiring in 1991 from Witco. He was a past vice-president and member of Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union in Pekin.
He was a member of Empire Lodge 126, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Illinois in Pekin. He also was a member of Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria.
Marvin used to love to hunt and fish. He also liked to travel and enjoyed woodworking.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pekin, where he was a former trustee, usher & greeter. He also formerly served in the food pantry at the church.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Pekin. Pastor Vernon Risner will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, and also from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 700 South Capitol Street, Pekin, IL 61554 or to the American Cancer Society, 4234 North Knoxville Avenue, Peoria, IL 61614. Marvin was active with Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society for many years.
