PEKIN ~ Pauline Opal Karnes, 99, of Pekin, passed away at 10:53 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Pekin Manor.
Born February 14, 1920 in Spring Lake in Tazewell County to Coy F. and Mamie M. (Lawson) Swearingian, she married Carl W. Karnes on March 1, 1941 in Pekin. He died March 18, 2003 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Brad A. Karnes; one grandchild, Lynn Banzhaf; one great-grandchild, Kassia Karnes and one brother, Edward C. Swearingian, Sr.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna L. Banzhaf of Winter Park, Florida; one son, Larry (Lindsay) Karnes of Pekin; five grandchildren, Cindy Karnes of St. Paul, Minnesota, Lyle (Donjell) Karnes of Manito, Faith (Alex) Peters of Green Valley, Hope Smith and Luv Howe, both of Pekin; 13 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by one niece, Dorothy Walsh of Washington and three nephews, Robert (Debbie) Swearingian of Bellevue, David (Phyllis) Swearingian of Peoria and Edward (Sandy) Swearingian, Jr. of Mapleton, all who she loved dearly and enjoyed their family get togethers in Peoria.
Pauline had worked at Pekin Hospital in the laundry department for 10 years, retiring in 1989. She also worked as a self-employed housekeeper in the area. She was a member of the Pekin Hospital Retirees
A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Pauline displayed great traits to her family that included being caring, generous and kind-hearted.
An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, Pauline loved sewing, cooking and baking. She was known for her sugar cookies and always had a crowd around her when she baked them.
Pauline enjoyed taking drives in the country with her two sons and bringing friends and family to Spring Lake to visit her son and daughter-in-law at their restaurant.
She especially enjoyed visits from her daughter, Donna and “special” great-granddaughter, Morgan from Florida.
Pauline attended the Free Methodist Church in Pekin.
Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, August 9, 2019 at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Pastor Kim Bacon will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
Pauline’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at Pekin Manor Hospice Compassus for the care and support they provided during this difficult time.
