CREVE COEUR ~ William “Bill” Caroly Combs, 77, of Creve Coeur, passed away at 6:08 p.m. Thursday, September 5, 2019 at his residence in Lehigh Acres, Florida.

Born July 11, 1942 in Peoria to William J. and Ida L. (Herget) Combs, he married Rebecca “Becky” White on December 31, 1965 in Tazewell County. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Loretta Landis; two brothers, David J. Combs, and Fredrick Combs.

Surviving are his two sons, David “Billy” (Michele) Combs of East Peoria, Brian K. (Mary) Combs of Crozet, Virginia; three grandchildren, Ashley (Connor) Smith of Mackinaw, Ryan Combs of East Peoria, Harrison Combs of Crozet, Virginia, twin grandchildren on the way due in December; two sisters, Judy Gay of Pekin, and Linda Wheeler of Creve Coeur; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was a union carpenter for over 15 years and built several homes and two churches. Then he went on to college at age 42 to become a teacher and graduated from Union University in Tennessee. He cared for all who came in contact with him at East Peoria Community High School as a teacher and baseball coach for many years. After retirement he still stayed busy as a substitute teacher in Lee County Florida where Bill and Becky made their winter home. He also kept busy as the lead singer for Lamplighters Quartet for over 20 years. Bill could always be found outdoors doing yard work, woodworking or just enjoying himself. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan. When he was not outside or watching baseball, he would be listening to music and those that knew him know that he had a song for everything.

His visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday September 13, 2019 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home in Creve Coeur.  His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Tom Pisano.  An additional visitation will be held prior to the funeral service on Saturday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home.  Burial will be held at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin.
