Harold Dean Schmitt

Harold Dean Schmitt, 88, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, October 6, 2019 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street in Davenport.  He was formerly of Decatur and a Pekin native.

Born June 29, 1931 in Pekin to Harold Francis and Henrietta Grace (Martens) Schmitt, he married Louise A. Gebhardt on July 6, 1952 at First United Methodist Church in Pekin.  She survives of Davenport.

Also surviving are one daughter, Linda (Stephen) McConnell of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sons, Steven (Tina) Schmitt of Davenport and David (Thresa) Schmitt of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Matthew McConnell of Cedar Rapids, Andrew (Paula) Schmitt of Davenport, Krysta (Ryan) Arnold of Eldridge, Iowa, Karen (Jeremy) Head, Lisa Schmitt, Sara (Kelsey) Robson, all of Bloomington and Julie Schmitt of St. Louis, Missouri; fourteen great-grandchildren and one brother, Neil (Carolyn) Schmitt of Fayetteville, Arkansas.  He also leaves a brother-in-law, Terry Lee (Betty) Gebhardt of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Nora E. Mullen and one infant brother.

A 1949 graduate of Woodruff High School in Peoria, Dean served in the Illinois Air National Guard for 8 years.

Dean worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for 37 years, retiring in 1986 as a factory superintendent at the Decatur plant.

He loved volunteering with the Salvation Army.  Dean was a life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Decatur and served for many years as a teacher and as the emergency disaster coordinator for the Salvation Army in Macon County.  He was recognized by the Salvation Army in Decatur with the Local and Territorial Volunteer of the Year Award and was a Service to Mankind Award recipient.  He also formerly helped with scouting.

He was a great fan of Illini sports, Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.  He also enjoyed following the activities of his kids and grandkids.

He was a member of the Decatur Salvation Army Church and attended the Davenport Salvation Army Church.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.  Major Jolinda Shelbourn will officiate.  The family will receive friends following the funeral.  Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Pekin.
